Keep the Pressure On:

Hello fellow commonsencenomics warriors and Merry Christmas. In this busy season, it is easy to be caught up in all the things we need to do. There are gifts to buy, trees and houses to decorate, and let us not forget the family coming to visit and all that delicious food. However, it seems the liberal statists are not going to rest. This should not surprise us since most of them do not believe in God so why would they let up to honor the birth of God’s Son. This is why we must remain diligent and keep the pressure on.

The health care legislation is on the verge of passage in the Senate and it appears they may work through the usual Christmas recess and pass the legislation. As I have written earlier, this legislation would be an economic disaster. Deficits will explode, taxes will sharply increase, and additional jobs will be lost as health care is rationed in the interest of reducing costs. Moreover, did I mention that some unknown government bureaucrat would be making our health care decisions and not our doctor and us?

In addition, we get to pay for it for the next four years without enjoying the supposed benefits. We would not purchase anything else and pay for it for four years without getting to enjoy it so why do they think we would do this with our health care. The prospect of the whole thing is an abomination, or should I say an Obamanation to me.

Then there is the prospect of cap and trade legislation. With this legislation we will empower the government to further regulate what we drive, how much electricity we use, and most importantly determine how much we pay for energy. Sometimes I think it would be a good idea if we could have a one-year vacation from any additional government intervention in our lives.

This does not mean we cannot enjoy the holidays just that we need to remain diligent and keep an eye on what the statists are doing. Remember, we the people have the power of our vote and we need to remind these bozos that they face removal from office unless they change course. Do not let them wear us down but instead let us wear them down.

Everybody Does Not Mean Everyone:

Breaking news, the recession is over. At least that is what a prominent economic adviser to the President stated this weekend. In the interview this advisor was quoted as saying, “everybody agrees that the recession is over”. This statement can only lead us to one conclusion they are smoking dope or everybody does not mean everyone.

For example, those that are still out of work due to the recession cannot be included in everybody. Those who face foreclosure on their home are also not included in everybody and what about those who have jobs but have had their pay cut or did not receive a Christmas bonus this year. Everybody does not include small businesses that are struggling to survive. Therefore, I challenge you to ask yourself the question. Does everybody include me?

If you consider yourself a part of the everybody group than have a happy recession, or whatever you want to call it. However, you must consider that the experts could be wrong and that you could find yourself unemployed, facing foreclosure or worse. Where will you turn to for help? Will it be the government? Did you know they are broke, working on borrowed money, and finding it difficult to borrow more money? Will you rob your children’s piggy bank but wait we are already doing that with all the debt we are piling up? Of course, we all know that all this is Bush’s fault so why not just go to him and demand a bailout.

It is time to face the truth, we are in serious trouble and the policies of this administration will only make matters worse. That is why we need to continue speaking out and educating our friends and relatives. The education system is not doing it and has failed us for many years.

We are the economy. It is time for us to speak out against this tyranny. One way of doing this is to email this or any other postings to your friends and relatives. You can do this by clicking on the envelope icon at the end of this posting. We have the right to speak out so join me in using that right.

Take a Pause:

In this busy and turbulent season, it is easy to stress out. That is why I wanted to take a moment and share the story of the first Christmas.

Luke 2:1-20

At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2(This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 All returned to their own towns to register for this census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David's ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, his fiancé, who was obviously pregnant by this time.

6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the village inn.

8 That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were terribly frightened, 10 but the angel reassured them. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I bring you good news of great joy for everyone! 11 The Savior — yes, the Messiah, the Lord — has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And this is how you will recognize him: You will find a baby lying in a manger, wrapped snugly in strips of cloth!"

13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others — the armies of heaven — praising God:

14 "Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to all whom God favors."

15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, "Come on, let's go to Bethlehem! Let's see this wonderful thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

16 They ran to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 17 Then the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 18 All who heard the shepherds' story were astonished, 19 but Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart and thought about them often. 20 The shepherds went back to their fields and flocks, glorifying and praising God for what the angels had told them, and because they had seen the child, just as the angel had said.

NLT

Take a moment during this busy season and do as the shepherds did. Remember that baby in the manger. I hope you do for it is that little baby that would grow up, minister to the lost and hurting in society, and die for their sins. The truth is that God gave the greatest Christmas gift ever given on that first Christmas. The question is, will we leave the gift under the tree, or unwrap it.

Another Politically Correct War:

In last Tuesday’s speech at West Point, Barak Obama outlined his plan to send an additional 30 thousand troops into Afghanistan. With the situation in Afghanistan deteriorating, the additional troops are much needed. However, the generals on the ground asked for an additional 40 thousand so we all hope the 30 thousand will be able to do the job.

The most troubling part of the President’s plan was his statement about pulling out the troops in 18 months. It appears me the President is trying to appease both the left and the right on this important issue. He expects the right to be happy that he is sending in additional troops, albeit less than the generals are asking for. He expects the left to be happy that he has a timeline to withdraw from the war. The truth of the matter is that it is the enemy that determines when hostilities end by surrendering.

We tried to fight a politically correct war in Vietnam. I remember the pictures of the North Vietnamese invading Saigon as our troops were pulling out. The North Vietnamese knew all they had to do was wait until the troops left and the country would be totally theirs.

Similarly the Taliban knows that all they have to do is wait the 18 months and then go in and retake the country. Have we forgotten that the last time the Taliban had control of Afghanistan they used it as a base from which to launch the 9/11 attacks that killed 3000 of our innocent citizens? Mr. President, I for one have not forgotten.

Our brave young men and women deserve better from their leaders. They do not have to join the Military but volunteer out of love for their country and what it stands for. They are fully aware of the risks but have decided that the protection of their country is worth the risks.

As their Commander and Chief, do our troops a favor and give then the troops, weapons, and supplies they need to win this war. Also, let them stay until the job is done so they can return as victors rather than in shame as our troops returning from Vietnam did. These young men and women are our nation’s heroes and it is time we began treating them as such.

The Meaning of Temporary:

The new unemployment numbers are out and the good news is that unemployment has dropped from 10.2 percent to 10 percent. First reaction to these numbers is positive but in light of the fraudulent job creation numbers, it would be prudent and wise to investigate these numbers further.

Statistical data like unemployment numbers is only valuable when compared with another set of comparable numbers. That is why when these numbers are reported they are always compared with the previous month. However, for the numbers to truly be comparable, the method of collecting the data needs to be consistent. Temporary events that cause a momentary increase or decrease in the data call for adjustment of the data in order to make the numbers comparable.

The greatest period of economic activity each year occurs during the Christmas Holiday. With this increased economic activity, companies hire temporary help to handle the extra workload. If the Government fails to adjust unemployment numbers to account for these temporary events, the numbers for November and December each year would always be better than those of the rest of the year.

The administration attributed the unemployment decrease to the addition of temporary jobs. Unless these jobs are going to become permanent, they represent a temporary event and the figures should be adjusted. It will be interesting to see what happens in January but wait; we will be adding 10,000 temporary census jobs then. However, these census jobs are also only temporary and will end in six months. So, Mr. President, what are you planning to do after these temporary jobs end?

Knowledge we have, Wisdom we need:

In the Bible we are told that God’s people parish for the lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). The acquisition of knowledge is a key component to success in every area of our lives. However, knowledge by its self is not enough to insure our success. To insure our success we need to seek wisdom on how to apply the knowledge we have obtained.

Solomon inherited the kingdom of Israel upon the death of his father David. While living with his father, Solomon must have acquired a great deal of knowledge. In fact, like many of us who have acquired much knowledge, he may have felt a bit overwhelmed. This might explain why he felt it important to ask God for the wisdom to apply the knowledge he had gained (1 Kings 3:3-9).

The book of Proverbs in the Bible is a collection of the wisdom Solomon gained from God. Unfortunately, in Solomon’s later years he strayed from the wisdom God had given him and suffered greatly. In the book of Ecclesiastes we are given a glimpse of his thinking after straying from Gods wisdom.

We too have access to a great deal of knowledge today. In fact, we sometimes feel overwhelmed with the great amount of knowledge we must process on a daily basis. My advice is to follow Solomon’s example and ask God for wisdom on what to do with the knowledge he has given us. I also recommend following through on the wisdom God gives so you will succeed and not perish as we are warned on Hosea 4:6.

Do not be distracted:

The buzz in the news this week was Tiger Wood’s car crash and the party crashers at the White House State Dinner. Stories such as these definitely peak our curiosity but we must be careful not to let these stories distract us from important issues that will directly affect our families and us.

The Senate began debate this week on the massive health care reform bill that will affect everyone’s health care. The bill also has tax increases that will actually take affect immediately while the supposed benefits will not take affect until 2013. In other words, we will be stuck paying for something for the next three years without receiving any benefits from it. Imagine making payments on a new car and not being able to drive it for three years.

We also cannot estimate the total cost of the program since when people perceive something as free, its demand increases exponentially. Once again, imagine buying your new car but not knowing what it is going to cost. Common sense tells us not to make such a deal.

To make matters worse, the Congress will begin debate on the cap and trade legislation the first of next year. This legislation will place massive regulations and taxes on energy production and usage in our nation. This will lead to higher energy prices and higher prices for everything else as manufacturers pass on their additional costs to the consumer.

In addition, India and China have decided not to abide by international environmental regulations since they view these as dangerous to their emerging technologies. If these regulations are dangerous to the economies of India and China, are they not also dangerous to our economy. In addition, since China and India will not have regulations on companies doing business in their countries, what is to stop U.S. companies from relocating their manufacturing operations and jobs to these nations thus creating additional unemployment?

Cap and trade is a bad idea economically and as we have begun to see recently is based on fraudulent data that fails to follow the scientific method. It is a bad idea to propose legislation that increases taxes, regulation, and unemployment in a recession. It is a tragedy to propose it based on fraudulent data.

Contact your senator and urge them to vote against health care reform. Contact your representative and senator and urge them not to even propose cap and trade and keep your focus on what has a direct affect on your family and you.

Chicken Little is Wrong:

For many years now, environmentalists have been telling us that the planet is doomed. The ice caps are melting, we will all be under water, and the planet will become so hot we will all die. It reminds me of the story of Chicken Little.

The steps in the scientific method are:
• Ask a Question
• Do Background Research
• Construct a Hypothesis
• Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment
• Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion
• Communicate Your Results
(http://www.sciencebuddies.org/mentoring/project_scientific_method.shtml)

The recently leaked emails tell us that climate change scientists are not following this method. These emails tell us that they are cherry picking the data and throwing out any data that disproves their hypothesis, which is that man is the cause of climate change.

In addition, the testing of the hypothesis involves attempting to disprove the hypothesis and not proving it true, which is the scientist’s assumption when beginning their research. If they find data that disproves their hypothesis, they are to draw the conclusion that their hypothesis was wrong. If, however, no disproving data is discovered they will form a theory based upon their hypothesis, however, good scientists will never conclude that their hypothesis is absolute fact leaving the matter open for someone else to conduct additional research.

Climate change scientists are skewing the results of their testing by throwing out any data that contradicts their hypothesis. Of course when they do this, the only conclusion they can draw is that their hypothesis is true. To make matters worse, they have concluded that their theory is not a theory at all but fact. So why are they doing this?

One possible reason is that research scientists depend on grant money to conduct their research. They must compete with other scientists for this grant money so they are under pressure to sensationalize their research. It is also difficult to raise money for a theory so they must conclude that their hypothesis is fact.

As the Congress considers cap and trade legislation, let us not make the same mistake as the climate change scientists and skip the step of insuring the research follows the scientific method. Otherwise, we will handcuff our economy with unnecessary regulations and taxes that will further contract our economy without producing any tangible results.

Contact your senator and representative and urge them to only consider climate change research based upon the scientific method as they consider this legislation.

Put God First and the Rest Will Fall in Place:

Matthew 6:33 tells us “and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern” (NLT). This conditional promise in God’s Word is especially important when we encounter tough economic times.

In these tough times, it is easy to become distracted and caught up in the issues and challenges of the times. This passage reminds us to make living for God our primary concern. When we do, everything else will begin to fall into place. This does not guarantee no hard times, just that God will provide a solution or way out of them (1 Corinthians 10:13). Finally, we know that God will provide for all our needs from his riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).

Therefore, stay focused on the Lord and commit your life to him today.

Leadership Lessons of Barack Obama

In this posting, I am going to share some leadership lessons I have learned from Barack Obama. If you have read my other postings to this blog, you no doubt have noticed that I do not consider Barak Obama a great leader. So why would I write a posting touting leadership lessons I have learned. The answer is simple, we can learn from someone else’s accomplishments as well as their mistakes.

The first lesson I have learned is that leaders must be decisive. The generals in charge of the war in Afghanistan have requested additional troops but the President has not made a decision yet. While he is acting indecisively in making this decision, the enemy is killing and injuring our troops. The lesson learned here is that in life and death situations, leaders must be decisive.

Another lesson I have learned from Barack Obama is that leaders cannot do everything themselves but they are responsible for everything. They, therefore, must be careful to surround themselves with competent people. When leaders fail to do this they can quickly find themselves involved in a scandal that is not their doing. Since the leader is responsible for the actions of their subordinates, they may incur some legal liability. However, even if the leader escapes any legal liability, his or her involvement will be an embarrassment causing the constituents to loose faith in the judgment of their leader.

When President Obama began selecting his cabinet, they failed to thoroughly vet people and appointed individuals with questionable backgrounds and even tax delinquencies. For example, Tim Geithner, Obama’s selection for Treasury Secretary owed back taxes for work he performed as a contractor. There is no withholding of taxes for contract labor so it is the responsibility of the taxpayer to report it as income on their tax return and pay the appropriate amount of tax.

Mr. Geithner claimed he was not aware he was required to report this as income and that it was just an oversight. However, when he was hired for this position, he was informed in writing of his responsibility to report it as income. Since Mr. Geithner will have oversight of the Internal Revenue Service, this became an embarrassing situation for the President and caused his constituents to begin doubting his judgment.

However, the most valuable lesson I have learned from President Obama is the importance of being honest. The administration has claimed to save and create thousands of jobs through the stimulus program. They even published information about these jobs on the website www.recovery.gov. An example of the information on the website claimed to have created jobs in the 15th congressional district of Arizona.

I live in Arizona and know that there are only eight congressional districts in Arizona so I want to know the name of the representative for the 15th district. This is only one of many examples of jobs created in fictitious congressional districts. The administration claims that this was an error and even if it was it raises doubts as to validity of the information this administration gives to the public.

I want to encourage voters to assess candidates for their abilities as a leader. It is our responsibility as voters to select leaders who are decisive, use good judgment in selecting their subordinates, and are honest with the public. President Obama has failed in these three areas thus far. Either he now has to improve in these areas or the voters will need to replace him in the next election.

Economic Threats

The economy continues to struggle. There are signs of recovery (e.g. the stock market going up) but unemployment continues to rise and home foreclosures are increasing. However, the Congress is currently working on healthcare reform and will begin working on the cap and trade legislation the first of next year. Instead of helping the economy, these two pieces of legislation will do more harm.

I have written extensively about the danger of the healthcare reform under proposal as well as offering a viable alternative. This information is available at www.althealthcareref.blogspot.com. The bill is currently under debate in the Senate so I urge everyone to contact their senators and urge them to vote against this economically dangerous legislation.

The other piece of legislation that will be under consideration next year is the cap and trade legislation. This legislation will place limits on energy usage in an effort to curb global warming. Besides the additional taxes and fees this legislation will place on already struggling industries, the legislation is based on fraudulent information.

I will be conducting research on this legislation and issue as well and will be publishing that information on the web. I will provide a link to this report on this blog when it is completed.

As the economy struggles, the last thing we want to do is place additional taxes and regulations on the private sector. Job creation does not come from the government but from the private sector. Government policy can either encourage or discourage economic growth. Our congress needs to quit wasting time with damaging legislation and begin working on legislation what will encourage economic growth. Either the current members of congress can change the direction of legislation they will propose or the voters will replace them with leaders who will. The power is in the hands of you the voter.

Be Thankful For

Thanksgiving is tomorrow and for many this has been a rough year. In times like these, it is often difficult to be thankful. However, as Christians we have much to be thankful for.

John 3:16 tells us that God loved us so much that he sent his only Son to die for our sins. God did not have to do this. He could have let us die in our sins. Aren’t we glad he did not do this but instead chose to give us a pardon.

We may experience trouble in this world but James 1:2 tells us to consider it joy when trouble comes our way. This seems like bad advice unless we know we have eternal life through the death of Gods Son.

If you do not have this assurance of eternal life, I urge you to gain that assurance now. Romans 10:9 tells us that if we will confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord of our life and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. After praying this simple prayer, I urge you to click on the link to Calvary Community Church. Click on the button “How to Know God” and select the “Your Decision” selection. Fill out the form and some information about your decision will be sent to you. You need not worry for you will not be put on any mailing list and no one will hound you for money. We simply want to inform you about the life changing decision you have just made.

We all have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, so have a happy Thanksgiving.

Beware of Political Groupthink

This week saw the release of Sarah Palin’s new book Going Rogue and the political firestorm has begun. Liberals say she is just a joke while conservatives believe she may be the conservative leader they have been waiting for. Only time will tell who is right. However, in an interview with Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday, Mrs. Palin gave an interesting answer to one of Rush’s questions.

I am not sure exactly what the question was but it had something to do with what she felt the Republican Party needed to do to win the next election. In her answer, Mrs. Palin stated that the Republican Party needed to have rigorous debate over the issues facing the nation. This answer made me think of something that happens in organizations causeing them to become irrelevant. This something is called groupthink.

When an organization ceases to allow the consideration of conflicting ideas it falls prey to groupthink. Since conflicting ideas are no longer allowed, only the ideas of the elite in the organization are even considered. Anyone not going with the groups ideas is kicked out. The organization soon stagnates, looses touch with the real world, and becomes infatuated with the ideas of the elite in the group. The interesting thing is that groupthink is anything but thinking since any rogue thoughts are quickly eliminated from consideration.

As we look at the Democratic Party today, we see a party dominated by the agenda of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid. Any Democrat who dares go against their agenda is threatened with lack of support for re-election and since politicians generally crave power, these rogues soon give in or go away. The declining approval ratings of both the Congress and the President are evidence that their groupthink is causing them to loose touch with the electorate.

Mrs. Palin’s call for rigorous debate by Republicans was a call to allow consideration of all ideas in the primaries so that the party can choose the candidate that best supports what is important to them. If the Republican Party follows Mrs. Palin’s advice, the electorate will see them as the party that is in touch with their desires. This is how Ronald Reagan won two landslide elections and is how the Republican Party can take back control of both the Congress and the White House.

So, let the rigorous debate begin.

Phantom Job Creation or More Lies.

It is puzzling to me that while unemployment is rising to 10.2%; the administration is telling us that the stimulus package is creating jobs. What puzzles me even more is why the unemployment numbers are not going down with all of the new jobs. This week the administration provided us with a probable answer. The jobs created are phantom jobs.

On the website, www.recovery.gov individuals can track the stimulus money and how many jobs it has created. In Arizona, they claim to have created jobs in both the 10th and 15th congressional district. The only problem is that Arizona only has eight congressional districts so any jobs created in the 10th and 15th district must be phantom jobs.

It never ceases to amaze me the links this administration will go to in order to justify their failed policies. Now they expect us to be stupid enough to believe in phantom job creation in phantom congressional districts. I for one am not going to buy the lie.

Join me in supporting candidates for office that will be honest with the American People. It is time to throw these lying SOB’s out of office and replace them with people we can trust.

Miraculous Provision

In the movie the Ten Commandments we see a depiction of the miraculous deliverance if Israel from Egyptian slavery. In the movie, we see the plagues of Egypt depicted climaxing in the death of all of the Egyptian first born. We also see the army of Pharaoh drowned in the Red Sea.

Not mentioned in the movie, however, is how God provided food and clothing for the Jews during their 40-year journey through the wilderness. In Deuteronomy 8:3 God reminds them that he fed them with Manna during their journey. This Manna was something no one had ever seen before or since. Deuteronomy 29:5 also tells us that even their clothes and shoes did not wear out while walking in the desert for 40 years.
These are examples of how God will provide for his people when they have need.

Our present economic recession has left many with severe financial needs. However, many are turning to the government to provide these needs. I want to challenge those of you reading this that have needs to turn to God instead of the government to meet their needs. The same God who took care of his people in the wilderness for 40 years is available to you today so ask Him for His help. He is listening and waiting to hear from you and provide for your needs.

Please Call it What it is

We were all shocked upon hearing of the shootings at Fort Hood in Texas. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of those brutally murdered and wounded in the incident. However, when we began finding out more about the alleged gunman, we realized that this was more than just an unfortunate tragedy it was terrorism.

Many who worked with Major Hasan knew something was wrong. For example, even though he checked no religious preference on his enlistment papers, he was a devout practicing Muslim. In fact, there were even complaints from some of his patients that he tried to convert them to Islam. There is nothing wrong with being a Muslim in our country but we must ask ourselves why he felt it necessary to lie about his religious preference. Is he not proud of his beliefs? Did he have something to hide?

The most alarming fact is that this attack was preventable. Investigators were prohibited from launching a full-scale probe into Major Hasan’s emails sent to a radical Imam. These investigators were told this would be a violation of his First Amendment rights. I do not believe this is what they had in mind when they added the First Amendment to the constitution.

What they had in mind was that the newly formed nation would not become tyrannical like the government from whom they had just gained independence. To prevent this from happening, the founders wanted to guarantee an individuals right to speak out against government policy when they disagreed with it. However, this was not the case with Major Hasan. The emails in question were to an Imam of terrorists, including the 9/11 terrorists, who are enemies of this nation. In order for this nation to protect our security, we must look at emails from an officer of our military to individuals with ties to enemies of our nation.

In addition to this, others who worked with Major Hasan had concerns but were afraid to voice their concerns out of fear of being branded a racist. It is interesting that no one seems to be concerned about their First Amendment right to express these concerns.

After the attacks of 9/11, the citizens of this nation were urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. This vigilance has kept us save for over eight years and been instrumental in foiling many potential terrorist attacks on our soil. Are we now going to put the nation at the same level of risk that existed prior to 9/11 by placing a gag order on citizens who witness suspicious activity?

The bottom line is that our nation is now in the same position it was on September 10, 2001. Back then, our intelligence services were not allowed to share information with each other. Because of this limitation, the terrorists of 9/11 were able to carry out their acts resulting in the deaths of thousands of Americans while the bloated intelligence bureaucracy could do nothing.

The incident at Fort Hood exposed weaknesses in our national security. Unless we repair these weaknesses, it is just a matter of time before some terrorist group attempts to exploit these weakness and commit another 9/11 type of attack. We as a nation need to wake up and realize we are at war with terrorism, we have enemies that want to kill us, and our government needs to be free to do everything possible to prevent it including sharing and investigating suspicious activity.

I invite your to comments on this issue.

10.2% = Economic Recovery

In the sci-fi movie Time Cop, science has perfected time travel. With this new technology, rules were put in place to prevent individuals from gaining an advantage such as knowing who will win the Super Bowl or what stocks will go up in the future. To enforce these new rules a new police force of time cops was formed. During the movie, we were warned that if you traveled in time and met up with yourself, you had to be careful not to touch the other you. The rule was that “the same matter cannot occupy the same space”.

This leads us to the question of how 10.2% unemployment and economic recovery can occupy the same space. My guess is that this is possible as long as you measure economic recovery solely based solely on success of Wall Street.

The stock market has been rising in recent days and this is good news, especially for those with money in the market. Experts tout that this equates to success in corporate America since it is a reflection of rising stock prices for the companies listed in the stock exchanges. However, it fails to take into account the plight of small companies that are not listed in the stock exchange. Since these small to medium companies make up a majority of the workforce, contraction of these companies results in rising unemployment. Therefore, by ignoring the plight of Main Street, you can declare an economic recovery.

However, those unemployed workers from Main Street still vote and they will vote in the next election with their pocket books. The recent elections in New Jersey and Virginia are signs of the growing economic discontent on Main Street. Politicians declaring an economic recovery in the midst of 10.2% unemployment need to beware. The truth is that 10.2% unemployment and job security for politicians claiming economic recovery cannot occupy the same space.

I invite your comments on this issue.

Living Free From Worry

I spite of all the negative political and economic news in the media today, it is possible to live a worry free life. This does not mean that all our problems miraculously disappear but that we do not need to worry about them. The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:33-34:

33 and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.

34 "So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.
NLT

Living worry free means not committing our lives to our finances but unto God. This is difficult to do because secular teaching teaches us to focus on our careers, working hard and earning lots of money. This does not mean that these things are not important but they are not to be the primary focus of our lives. Worry free living means having ones priorities straight with God on top.

As a benefit of seeking God first we have our needs met and can live worry free lives. Our blessed worry free life glorifies God and its witness will lead others to want a relationship with Christ. Therefore, as you go about your tasks this week, remember to have the Kingdom of God as your primary focus. It is only then that everything else will fall in place and we can have peace in our lives.

Until next week and may God bless you.

The Insanity Continues

The jobless recovery continues. Unemployment sets a new high of 9.8 percent but if you count those who have given up finding a job and those who have taken a part-time job or one paying less than they made before, the rate is closer to 17 percent. In addition, the problem is compounded by additional businesses being forced to close their doors due to the continued economic contraction. Yet, the administration acts surprised that home foreclosures continue to rise. Could it be that individuals who are out of work do not have the cash to make their mortgage payment?

However, never fear, hope is here. We can get the 2016 Olympics and that will stimulate the economy, at least in Chicago but wait, I guess we messed that one up. Thankfully, the Nobel Prize came just in time to restore hope, like that is going to put people back to work.

However, before all hope is lost, we can still do healthcare in spite of those rascally Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats. We can come in the back door and attach it as an amendment to another bill or just pass it in conference without them being able to do anything about it.

We can also tax them now, cut their Medicare and Medicaid benefits now and implement the public option health plan in 2013 after Obama (aka the Messiah) is re-elected. That way when it fails, those rascally Republicans will not use it against us in the 2012 election. This will also give us additional tax revenue and spending cuts to reduce the $1.4 trillion deficit before the election.

Finally, we need cap and tax, or is it now called pollution reduction, so we can keep our environmental buddies happy because we will need their money for the election since we messed up with Joe Wilson and the republicans are raising mucho (for our Spanish speaking constituents) more money than we are.

If all this were not so true it would make a hilarious episode for a sitcom. Unfortunately, however, it is all too true. What the American economy needs is more capital through tax reductions and reductions in regulations so businesses can invest and expand. This will create more real jobs so individuals can keep their houses and buy their own health care on the open market.

We can also increase competition in health care through the free market. Go to www.althealthcareref.blogsopt.com to find out how. This increased competition cuts costs to consumers giving them even more capital to invest and spend and it will improve the quality of care since providers will have to compete with each other.

As far as cap and trade goes, it may create some jobs for environmentalists but it is a job and budget killer for most individuals and an extremely destructive idea. We all want clean air and the market will develop green products as people demand them but it will never happen if individuals are forced into accepting green as a way of life.

It is time to get engaged. Vote in the 2010 and 2012 elections and bring unemployment to the liberals in congress and President Obama. Doing this will save our jobs and create jobs for those who have lost theirs. Work the polls in your prescient to insure the elections are fair. Work the phones for conservative candidates to push them over the top. Bring other conservatives to the polls to insure a massive turnout. And most of all, do not give up hope for we can bring about real hope and change to this country by proactively taking back control of this economy.

It’s a Movement not Community Organization

It is hard to believe that eight years ago this past September 11th we witnessed the worst attack in history on the civilians of this nation. However on September 12th we witnessed another event of monumental proportions for on that date, a movement was born.

Unfortunately, some are blowing off this movement claiming it is just astroturf and not a grass roots movement. The definition of an astroturf movement is one that is organized by a community organizer who gathers a group or participants together whereas a pure movement is spontaneous in nature. Astroturf movements are what community organizers, like President Obama, do but what we saw on Saturday was not astroturf and this is why.

First an astroturf movement usually has professionally produced signs that are given to the participants when they show up. The signs are usually uniform in nature and have a common saying or theme. The signs we saw on 9/12 were homemade. They had a common theme but each sign was unique.

Second, the participants in an astroturf movement are often paid to participate or, if they are not paid, their expenses are covered by the organizer. What we saw on 9/12 were participants who all paid their own way with many coming from other states. In fact I heard of one individual who traveled to Washington DC from California at their own expense to participate.

Third, the participants in an astroturf movement participate often in marches and protests. Protesting is old hat to them. On 9/12 we witnessed a group of individuals many of which had never done this before. They were there because they wanted to exercise their first amendment right to free speech rather than keeping quiet like they had done in the past.

Movements are spontaneous. The participants in a movement have some deeply felt concern that they want to voice. Due to this deeply felt concern, these participants are persistent and not easily silenced.

In a representative republic such as the United States, where the public elects its leaders, the voices of a movement such as we saw on 9/12 need to be heeded by elected officials if they are to keep their positions. Unfortunately for them, the leaders to whom this march was aimed are paying it little attention and are belittling its impact. They do this at their own peril.

Kudos to all who participated in the 9/12 protest and those who stayed at home but share the participant’s concerns, you are great Americans. Hang onto your values and keep speaking out. Election Day 2010 and 2012 is coming when we can make the ultimate statement and elect officials who share our heart felt values.

Deficits Without End

By Dale Weckbacher

Many of us have been shocked to see the skyrocketing deficits our politicians are creating. During the Presidents speech to congress on September 9, he stated that skyrocketing health care costs are the major contributor to these deficits. This is hard to believe since the only direct involvement by the government that contributes to government spending is Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration. These programs are currently running in the red but are they contributing to the skyrocketing deficits we now see?

Deficits are the result of the paying out of more money than the government collects through taxation and the collection of fees. The current economic recession means that business are making less money and thus paying less in taxes. In addition, these businesses are laying off employees who now pay less in taxes. Revenues to the treasury are down considerably so this too is a contributor the current deficits.

However, the factor contributing the most to the current deficits is the out of control spending of our government. How long can we spend trillions of dollars bailing out failed banks and auto companies? How long can we subsidize mortgages to individuals that could not afford them? Now they are proposing the subsidizing health insurance for individuals that either choose not to buy it or cannot afford it. They are also proposing health insurance for illegal aliens even though they claim they are not. They are bankrupting our country. They are bankrupting our children and grandchildren’s future.

The true cause of the deficits is the combination of reduced revenues to the treasury and out of control spending. However, our politicians are beholden to the special interests bankrolling their campaigns but you have the power to stop this corruption.

I urge everyone reading this to contacting their representative and senators letting them know about your concerns. Remind them that they may feel that they have to cater to the special interests bankrolling their campaigns but you have the power of the vote. It is not who raises the most money but who gets the most votes that win elections. Remind them that you have the power of the vote and can send them corrupt home.

Normally I would not support activity that increases unemployment but in this case, I would make an exception. We need to make these corrupt politicians experience what their policies have caused many Americans to experience. They need to feel what it is like to loose their cushy jobs.

If you do not know how to contact your representative or senator, you can use the link I have provided at the right of this text. Exercise your first amendment right and speak out. In addition, show up at the polls in 2010 and 2012 to eliminate the corruption in our government.

Flawed Logic

As I write this, the Dow is up 85.24. This increase in the Dow, according to Lynn Thomasson’s posting at (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087
&sid=ac083YlUAaaM) is attributed to a slowing in the pace of job losses. This makes us want to ask, what are they thinking?

The economy lost 216,000 jobs in August which was less than the experts estimated. I’m sure these 216,000 individuals and their families find comfort in the fact these job losses are less than expected. However, I never cease to be amazed at the logic of these so called experts.

In my recent physical my doctor recommended that I loose 10 pounds. However, when I heard this report on the economy I think I will use their logic the next time I see my doctor. What I plan on doing is to keep on eating like I always have. I estimate that by doing this I will put on 10 pounds. However, if I only put on 8 pounds, I will tell my doctor that I have good news. Instead of putting on 10 pounds like I thought I would I only put on 8 pounds which means I actually lost 2 pounds.

It’s time to throw these idiots out of office. No wonder the country finds itself in the condition it is in today with idiots like this in charge. We have a congressional election in 2010 and a presidential election in 2012. I urge everyone, especially those currently out of work, to become involved and support new leadership in these upcoming elections.

We need leadership that can think intelligently. Job losses hurt the common man. People who loose their job cannot spend money which causes additional economic decline and additional job losses. Vote for individuals in these next elections that favor stimulating the economy by cutting taxes so companies will have additional capital available to expand their businesses and create new jobs. It’s not bad for these businesses to make a profit for profitable businesses expand and create new jobs.

Protecting our Most Important Piece of Personal Property

By Dale Weckbacher

The economic engine of the United States is an example of success for the world. In just 233 years the nation has went from an idea expressed on paper by the framers of the Declaration of Independence to a world economic super power.

A contributing factor to the economic success of the United States has been its view of personal property rights. Laws in the United States have allowed individuals to have full ownership of the fruits of their labors. This has served as an incentive for hard working Americans to work even harder contributing to the nation’s economic growth but personal property is much more than the things we accumulate through our hard labor. The most important piece of personal property we own is our bodies.

Without healthy bodies it becomes difficult, if not impossible, to work and share in the economic opportunities offered by the United States. However, the rights of individuals to healthcare that helps them maintain good health is now threatened. This threat does not come from outside this country but is from within through the public healthcare option now under consideration in the Congress.

Close examination of this bill reveals that it is not the introduction of a public option, which will compete with private health insurance, but a plan, which will incrementally introduce single payer healthcare to the United States. On page 16, the legislation prohibits private insurers from enrolling new members and if members make changes to their coverage, they automatically move to the public option. This will incrementally drive private insurers out of business and result in everyone being on the public plan.

Canada and England now have single payer plans that are running over budget leading to the rationing of care and long waits for healthcare procedures due to a shortage of individuals going into the healthcare profession. Canadians come to the United States for healthcare in order to escape the Canadian single payer system. The question to ask is do we want to see the high quality healthcare system in the United States degrade into a failed single payer system like the one in Canada and England.

What the recent heated town hall debates have shown us is that the answer to the question is no. Americans like the current quality of the healthcare system but they are concerned about the rising costs. However, they do not want to reduce healthcare costs by turning control of the healthcare system over to the government. Instead, they would like more choices such as they currently have with auto insurance. This will empower patients to seek out coverage that best suits their needs.

In addition to the incremental phasing out of private coverage, the public option also moves the decision-making power of patients’ health care from their doctor to a Health Benefits Advisory Committee. This committee will report to the President and determine the level of coverage offered by the public option. Since we all will eventually be on the public option, they will eventually have control over everyone’s healthcare. This will mean that control over our bodies, our most valuable piece of personal property, will be in the government’s hands.

We must act now to stop passage of healthcare reform that institutes a public option by contacting our congressperson, senator, and the President. Let them know that just as many of them support a woman’s freedom of choice over her body by allowing abortions, we want to maintain control over our bodies by being free to make our own healthcare decisions. Links to finding your congressperson, senator, and contacting the White House are in the Internet links on this blog. Do not hesitate contact them today.

A Clunker of a Program

“Cash for Clunkers” has been a fiasco. A program, designed to stimulate the struggling auto industry by providing federal rebates to consumers who purchased a more fuel-efficient vehicle has run out of money after only two weeks of operation. The program, scheduled to last until November has run out of cash and is seeking an infusion of additional cash.

The primary cause of the failure of this program lies in its inability to predict the demand of the consumer. At its inception, the government allocated $1 billion to fund the program until November. However, after only two weeks of operation, the government has shutdown the program because it has run out of cash leaving dealers who sold vehicles discounted by the amount of the anticipated rebate waiting for their money.

The reasons for the failure of this program mirror the reasons rent control has failed where it is used. When the government or any central planner steps into the free market and attempts to prop up demand by artificially lowering prices either through price controls (i.e. rent control) or a rebate (i.e. Cash for Clunkers) they cause market failure. In the case of Cash for Clunkers the problem is that the government incorrectly assessed the reason for declining demand in the auto industry.

The government thought the reason for declining demand was high prices and determined that a rebate program would take care of the problem. They were correct in their prediction that the program would increase demand for new cars and actually underestimated this demand. This is why the program ran out of money. However, even though the program has resulted in a temporary spike in car sales, it has also created a problem that will surface in the future.

The reason for declining demand in the auto industry has little to do with prices and much more to do with rising unemployment. With unemployment approaching 10%, 1 in 10 Americans has lost their job and the other nine are living in fear that they are next. For this reason, the nine employed individuals have been saving their money and driving the old clunker longer.

In slow economic times like the ones we are currently in, this is the most commonsense strategy for individuals to have. If the government wants to involve itself in stimulating demand in the auto industry, and other industries, it needs to stop wasting money implementing gimmicky programs like “Cash for Clunkers” and formulate policies to create jobs and reduce unemployment. However, this is not what our wonderful representatives in government did. Instead, they implemented a gimmicky program and directed consumers to purchase new cars they may loose if they become unemployed due to the continued economic slowdown.

When will our representatives in government wake up and implement real economic stimulus through tax cuts that put money in the hands of individuals and businesses? The answer, unfortunately, is never for the current crop of policy makers. That is why we the people need to step up. We need to write our congresspersons, senators, and The President and tell them to stop this insanity. We need to let them know that if they fail to do this there will be serious consequences for them in the next election.

To make this easy, I have provided links, in the internet links section of this blog, to find your senator and representative so you can contact them. I am also providing a link the White House so you can let The President know how you feel about the current direction of government.

We are still the boss in this country and it is time to engage.

Resumes, Real Recovery, and Remembering Fallen Heroes

Resumes:

After getting our attitude right and our thoughts together, it is time to begin our job search campaign. The first step is preparing a resume. In this posting we will be looking at the purpose of a resume. We will also look at what a resume should look like, and how to make a resume more effective when submitted online.

The purpose of a resume is to get a job interview. A resume is like a calling card, it should be something that is easy to read, and addresses the needs of the job. For this reason when submitting a resume it is wise to make sure it addresses the needs of the prospective employer. However, make sure to be honest on the resume. We often hear of high profile individuals who are humiliated and lose their jobs due to lying on their resumes. Remember the bible tells us that our sins will find us out.

Highlighting items on a resume means insuring that qualifications the prospective employer is looking for are prominently displayed on the resume. In addition, many resumes filed online go through preliminary screening by an automated system. Employers program this system to look for certain key words in the resume. Job seekers can find these key words in the job description so it is wise to insure your resume contains these words so it passes the initial automated screening process and someone with a pulse reviews it.

The ideal resume is one page long so be brief. Using bullet points to highlight accomplishments and job duties makes the resume easier to read. This also makes it easier to move key accomplishments and duties to the top of the list when these pertain to the job or contain some of the key words found in the job description.

In a market where applicants file resumes online, a resume soon becomes one of hundreds or thousands. The key to having a resume turn into an interview is getting it noticed. Insuring the resume addresses the job requirements in an honest manner as well as making it easy to read is important but following up after filing a resume makes it even more noticeable. This step is not going to be easy but will be well worth it. We know the company we have applied with and will need to conduct some research to find the hiring manager for the position we are seeking. After doing this, we can forward a copy of our resume and a cover letter to this person.

In the cover letter, the first paragraph states the job applied for and that we have already applied online but that we wanted to make sure they received a copy of our resume. The second paragraph states our qualifications for the position. The last paragraph establishes a time when we will contact the hiring manager to set up an interview. Since most applicants do not take the time to follow up on resumes they submit this step will set your resume apart from most of the others, increasing the chance of getting an interview.

As a final thought, it is not necessary lose a job before writing a resume. Employed and unemployed workers should have a resume ready and update it when changes occur. This will make it possible to take advantage of opportunities that come up as well as saving time if we suddenly become unemployed. Remember, our prayers are with you and feel free to contact me at dalewsr34@gmail.com for more information, prayer, or encouragement.

Economic recovery! If this is an economic recovery, count me out.

Friday May 22, 2009 is a great example of why we should not judge economic recovery on the stock market. On this day the market began on an upswing spurred by better than expected earnings by Sears. Sears is one stock listed on the market and is hardly an indicator of how the total U.S. economy is going. Fortunately, sanity returned later in the day when the market began looking at the costs of borrowing by the government.

This demonstrates the volatility of the market when the positive results of one retailer can create a market upswing only to have the market drop later in the day over concerns about government borrowing. However, unfortunately many so called economic experts speak of pending recovery based solely on market upswings. This is a phony economic recovery when what we need is real economic recovery.

Real economic recovery occurs with growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) and job creation. Since our economy is currently experiencing GDP retraction and the continued loss of jobs, we are hardly in a period of economic recovery. What we need is an infusion of capital on Main Street through tax cuts to spur economic activity and job creation. The question I have for the so-called experts is why is that so hard to understand?

Remembering our fallen heroes:

On this Memorial Day many of us will have the day off work and take advantage of the time to be with family and friends. It is great to have this downtime with friends and family but let us not forget the true reason for this holiday.

I value the privilege through this blog to teach, comment, and motivate others using the written word. The founders of our nation valued this privilege as well and made freedom of speech a right in our nation but freedom of speech is not free.

Through our nations history we have confronted numerous enemies who wanted to take our basic rights away from us including the freedom of speech. In the course of protecting our rights, many have given their lives on the battlefield so on this Memorial Day, we need to take a moment to remember these fallen heroes. Also, remember their families for they have also paid a high price for our freedoms.

You May Have Lost Your Job, but You Still Have a Job to Do

Perhaps the most important thing when we lose our jobs is to maintain a good attitude. Okay that is easier said than done when you are worried about how to pay the mortgage, car payment, and of course feed the family. It is normal to feel worried about these things however, we may have lost our jobs but we still have an important job to do, find a new job.

It is okay to take a week off when we lose our jobs in order to get our thoughts together. During this week, you should file for unemployment and apply for temporary work to get some cash coming in. I also recommend depositing any severance money received into savings as you may need it later on.

After our week of grieving, you need to start your new job. I recommend getting up at the time you were accustomed to when you were working. That is unless you worked night shift or graveyard, in which case I recommend getting up at 6 AM. You should also maintain your normal routine such as showering, eating breakfast, exercising, or anything else you were accustomed to doing when working.

It is now time to get to work. Your duties now include conducting research to find job leads, applying for jobs, following up on applications, interviewing, following up on interviews, and finally finding that new job. During the next few weeks I will be giving guidance on how to be more effective in each of these duties.

I recommend using a planner of some kind to schedule time for each of these duties. Ideally, you should spend as much, or more, looking for work as you did when working. Writing these items on a planner also lets you see that you are doing something positive each day towards finding employment.

Finally, you need to find a coach, cheerleader, and supervisor who you can trust. This may be a spouse, relative, close friend or former co-worker. Since your new job does not have a supervisor, you need to seek out someone who will keep you motivated, accountable, and positive during this challenging time in your life. The only thing that will keep you from finding a new job is if you quit your new job. This is one job that you cannot afford to quit so find someone to talk you out of quitting should you ever consider it.

I hope these few words will give you some encouragement. I am praying for each of you that your job search will be productive. I am also looking forward to sharing some tips in the next few weeks that will make you more effective and give you an edge during your job search. May God bless each one of you.

Commentary

This week I heard an economist that was excited about the jobless recovery we were experiencing. His recovery was because Wall Street was up over the month of April. The fallacy in his opinion is that Wall Street is not Main Street.

What the economy needs is a sustainable recovery. However, you cannot have a sustainable recovery without jobs. Sustainable economic recovery only happens with increased economic activity. Wall Street may be increasing but Main Street is not, leading to the continued loss of jobs and shrinking of the GDP.

Unemployed people do not have money to spend. As the economy continues to lose jobs there are fewer people with money to spend. As economic activity continues to decline, more jobs will be lost. This vicious cycle will only stop when the government stops its present policy of bailouts and nationalizing of industries like the auto industry and cuts it’s spending and taxes putting more money in the hands of individuals and businesses. This additional money will start increasing economic activity causing businesses to begin hiring back people they have laid-off.

What we need is a recovery on Main Street!!

A Change of Plans

As a Christian I have learned that I must follow Gods will in my life. When I initially started the commonsensenomics and commonsensenomics 101 blogs, I intended to teach about economics from a commonsense approach. However, I never realized things in our country would change so rapidly. As I see it, our country is quickly moving from a free market country with freedom of choice, speech, and ownership of property to a socialist state where we must turn to government for help.

What the media gives us is either gloom and doom or syrupy praise over how The President or his wife looks. The American people are sick of hearing doom and gloom. They also do not want a fashion report on what The President or his wife is wearing. They are looking for answers and encouragement. That is why I am going to discontinue Commonsensenomics 101 and use Commonsensenomics as a place where people can receive encouragement in these tough times. I will also be offering practical things we can do to find a job if we are currently out of work or improve our financial position.

To start I want to give some encouragement to those currently out of work. Even though I still have a job, I have not been in the job market for 16 years. I also understand that if things do get worse, I could find myself suddenly thrown into the job market. For that reason, I attended a job search seminar held at my church yesterday.

I have attended job fairs and conventions in the past and discovered that these were not designed to hire people but were networking opportunities. This seminar was different because it gave practical advice on writing a resume, cover letter, interviewing etc. The main thing I learned from this seminar is that since I was in the job market, things have changed. It may be easy to apply online but your application or resume is one of thousands of others. This seminar taught us how to differentiate ourselves from the others.

The individuals who put on the seminar were experts involved in hiring employees for companies. This experience means they know what hirers are looking for in an applicant and how we can make ourselves stand out from the crowd. That is why I will be spending the next few weeks sharing some of the techniques covered in the seminar. My word to you is do not give up hope for you can find a job even in these economic times. All you need is some coaching on how to stand out from the crowd.

I then plan to move on to helping individuals improve their financial position. Many employed individuals are strangling in debt. To make matters worse they face the prospect of downsizing in their jobs. This leads to many sleepless nights. The good news is that with good financial coaching, debt reduction is possible for many.

I am currently in training to learn more about how to reduce debt and just as we should do with any knowledge we acquire, we should share it. Therefore, I plan to share the information with those who follow this blog. Therefore, if you know someone out of work or struggling with his or her finances, I encourage you to invite them to follow this blog.

Times may be tough but Americans have always had a dynamic spirit that has always helped them through rough times. Contrary to popular belief, that spirit is still alive as evidenced by the tea parties of April 15. With some encouragement, I believe we can revive that spirit in spite of who is in charge in Washington.

Which Tax System is Best?

As we saw from last weeks posting, Adam Smith provided 10 principles for a desirable tax policy. Let us take a moment and review these policies.

1. The tax policy must promote equality
2. The tax policy must be convenient. This means the costs and means of collecting taxes must be low and the administrative costs to taxpayers must also be low.
3. Certainty meaning the taxpayer can readily predict when, where and how a tax will be levied. The taxpayer also needs to be aware of the tax consequences of a particular type of transaction.
4. Economy meaning the tax policy has nominal collection costs and nominal compliance costs to taxpayers.
5. The tax system should be simple
6. The tax policy should be neutral in terms of its effect on business decisions
7. The tax should not reduce economic growth and efficiency
8. The tax should be easily understood by taxpayers.
9. The tax should be structured to minimize noncompliance.
10. The tax policy should enable the government to predict the amount and timing of revenue production.

Taxation is necessary in order for governments to provide basic protection, security, and services to the public they serve. With these guidelines as our guide we can now determine what method of taxation is best for the United States. I will first compare the present progressive income tax against the guidelines. We will then look at two alternative methods of taxation being considered and compare them against the guidelines. I will conclude by offering my opinion of which method I believe is best.

Progressive Income Tax:

As we saw from last weeks posting, the present progressive income tax system has become corrupt. However, how does it fair against Adam Smith’s guidelines?

1) Equality – Many mistake equality with fairness. They believe the present system promotes equality since it taxes lower income individuals at a lower rate. This is not equality but is fairness. Equality would mean everyone is taxed at the same rate where as fairness understands that certain individuals need a break so they can more easily provide for their basic needs. Our present system does not promote equality.
2) Convenient – The fact that the present system requires that we take time out or our busy lives and prepare a tax return is not convenient. Many individuals also have to pay someone to prepare their return since it is not easily understood.
3) Certainty – Since taxpayers cannot predict their tax rate until the end of the year, because it is dependant on their taxable income, the present system provides little certainty other than the fact we will have to pay something.
4) Economy – The IRS is the collection agent for the federal government and is a large blotted bureaucracy and the fact that many taxpayers have to pay a professional to prepare their annual tax return does away with any belief that the present system is economical.
5) Simple – The tax code is huge and written in highly technical language by politicians. Many tax professionals and lawyers have difficulty interpreting it. What is simple about that system?
6) Neutral – The effect of taxes enters into many business decisions. One example is an individual’s decision to purchase a home. Individuals who currently rent can take the same money they presently pay for rent and purchase a home so they can receive a tax deduction for interest on the mortgage plus a deduction for property tax and insurance. For many this becomes their primary reason for buying a home. However, the current housing crisis has shown that some people should continue to pay rent until their financial position improves and they can afford a home. Taxes should not be a consideration instead the financial condition of the individual should.
7) The progressive nature of the present system punishes achievement. This punishment of achievement slows economic growth. In addition, the costs of collection and compliance make the system inefficient.
8) The complexity of the tax code coupled with constant changes to the code makes it difficult for both tax professionals and non-tax professionals to understand.
9) The complexity of the tax code means that it is easy for a taxpayer to be in noncompliance without even knowing it. Tests have been conducted where several tax professionals prepared the same tax return and they all came up with a different result. All these tax preparers believe their return is in compliance but they cannot all be in total compliance.
10) The government collects revenue quarterly through withholding and estimated tax payments. However, between January 1 and April 15 as returns are filed they issue refunds and tax credits to individuals who qualify for them. This situation makes it virtually impossible for the government to predict the amount of revenue they will receive.

It should be obvious that the present tax system fails to meet even one of Adam Smiths guidelines. For this reason, many believe the time has come for a reform of our tax system. Two proposals are currently on the table so let us see how each of these proposals holds up against Mr. Smiths guidelines.

The Flat Tax:

Under a flat tax system, every taxpayer is taxed at the same rate. Since this is viewed by some as placing an undue burden on lower income individuals, the proposal also includes a $10,000 personal exemption for each family member. This means the first $40,000 of income for a family of four is exempt from any income tax. Any income over the amount of exemptions would be taxed at a flat rate of 15%.

Presidential candidate Steve Forbes ran in 1996 essentially on a platform of the flat tax. Steve Forbes did not win the nomination but he did bring national attention to this tax alternative and still promotes its benefits in Forbes magazine. Now let us see how the flat tax plan holds up against Mr. Smith’s guidelines.

1) Equality – Since all tax payers are taxed at the same rate, this plan is more equitable than the current plan. It is also fair because of the deductions for exemptions.
2) Convenient – Everyone would file his or her taxes on a simple form each year. There would no longer be the need of hiring an accountant to determine what deductions a taxpayer could take since all they will need to do is count how many exemptions they have.
3) Certainty – Since we will begin the year with knowledge of how many exemptions we have, taxpayers will easily be able to determine their taxable income.
4) Economy – The simplicity of the form means compliance and collection costs will be low.
5) Simple – Again, a simpler form that taxpayers will be able to fill out doing simple math with a calculator.
6) Neutral – Individuals and businesses will easily be able to predict their tax liability and factor it into business decisions.
7) Under this plan, even if a taxpayer’s income increases, his of her tax rate will not. This removes the disincentive that exists under the current progressive system to make more income because the tax rate increases. In addition, for those interested in fairness, these ambitious individuals will still pay more tax dollars, just at the same rate.
8) Easy to understand as long as you can count and do simple math and we have calculators for that.
9) Easy to comply with – Simply fill out the form, make out the check, and mail it to the IRS
10) Easy for the government to predict revenue – Employers will send quarterly reports showing the income of their employees as well as the number of exemptions they are claiming. The government will be able to predict taxable incomes for each taxpayer and can budget accordingly.

It is clear that the flat tax eliminates many of the problems that exist in the present system. This is primarily due to its simplicity. It also does not punish achievement so proponents of this program believe it will promote economic growth something drastically needed in these recessionary times.

One of the drawbacks is that there will be no withholding or refundable tax credits. This will eliminate tax refunds and mean that individuals will have to actually write a check for their taxes each year. However, this will make individuals aware of their real tax liability, something that is missing in today’s system.

Unfortunately politicians looking to earn votes could also corrupt the flat tax system. They could accomplish this by adding deductions or tax credits to the code just as they have done with the present system. In the legislation for the new flat tax language would have to be added requiring a super majority of a 2/3 vote to make changes to the code.

The $10,000 personal exemption also needs to be indexed to inflation so that it will increase during inflationary times. If this is not done, individuals will pay a higher percentage of their income during these times as incomes usually increase with inflation.

The Fair Tax:

The fair tax is essentially a national sales tax. For those disenchanted with the current corrupt system it seems to be a viable option. In fact a best selling book, The Fair Tax written by Neil Boortz outlines the specifics of the plan. However, how does this tax proposal hold up against Adam Smith’s guidelines?

1) Equality – The tax is paid at the point of sale with no regard to the income level, race, gender, etc. of the consumer.
2) Convenient – For the taxpayer since the tax is levied automatically at the point of sale but the merchant becomes the tax collector for the government and will be required to fill out reports to remit taxes collected for the government. However, since most state and local governments already have sales taxes, these merchants are already required to keep records of taxable sales so the additional recordkeeping requirements are minimal.
3) Certainty – Consumers will be aware of the tax that will be added to their purchase. For merchants the taxes collected become a liability that is remitted to the government monthly or quarterly.
4) Economy – For the consumer, the recordkeeping costs are zero and the rate of tax is a fixed rate based on the amount of the sale. For the merchant there will simply be one additional form to prepare in addition to those already required by the state and local governments.
5) Simple – the consumer has nothing to fill out. The merchant has an additional form to fill out.
6) Neutral – the merchant will no longer have to pay an income tax and becomes a tax collector for the government. The consumer knows what his liability will be and pays it at the point of sale.
7) Consumers will have additional disposable income due to no longer paying an income tax or having withholding taxes taken from their paychecks. This additional income will more than pay for the additional cost due to the additional sales tax on purchases. In addition, since merchants will no longer pay income taxes, they will be able to pass on savings to consumers since they factor income tax liability into their costs when determining the selling prices for their goods under the present system.
8) The tax is easy to understand for consumers since they simply pay it at the point of sale. For merchants they collect an additional tax at the point of sale and remit it to the government just as they do with state and local sales taxes they already collect.
9) The tax is easy to comply with for consumers since they will have no choice but to pay it at the point of sale. The merchant will collect the tax and hold it until required to pay it. They are already accustomed to doing this with their state and local sales taxes so they already keep records for the collection and remittance of taxes collected.
10) The ability of the government to predict revenue collection will not be as easy since it will depend on the level of consumer spending. However, the government already collects data to estimate consumer spending so they could use this figure to estimate revenue collection for use in their budgetary process.

It is clear that the fair tax would be simple and convenient for the taxpayer since they simply pay it each time they make a purchase. The merchant will have an additional report to fill out but they are already accustomed to filling out similar forms for their state and local governments. In addition, these merchants will no longer be required to fill out a corporate tax return so they will most likely save money on their recordkeeping requirements.

My choice of plan:

One thing is clear. The present progressive income tax system fails to meet any of Adam Smith’s guidelines. If Adam Smith were here today, he would be leading the way for tax reform; after all, he led the tax revolt that was the main cause of the American Revolution that led to the founding of this country.

That leaves us to decide on either the fair tax plan of flat tax plan. Both plans represent a marked improvement over the current plan. The flat tax would be easier to implement since there is already a constitutional basis for it. All that congress would have to do is rewrite the current tax code. However, what would prevent opportunistic politicians from corrupting this plan just as they did the current one.

One way to prevent such corruption of the system would be to include language in the legislation requiring a super majority of 2/3 approval by the congress of any changes to the code. However, if one party were to gain such a majority with a person of their party in the White House, they could swiftly corrupt the tax code. That is why I recommend going the additional step and introducing a constitutional amendment requiring a super majority vote of 2/3 of state legislatures on tax issues so that no matter what party is in charge in Washington, tax changes will be difficult to implement.

To implement the Fair Tax proposal we must first repeal the 16th amendment so we do not end up with an income tax in additional to the fair tax. However due to its simplicity to collect and enforce, I believe this is the best proposal on the table. However, tax reform is so necessary that I do not believe the nation can wait for the amendment process to be completed. Therefore, I recommend initial implementation of the flat tax followed by introduction of the amendment to repeal the income tax. I understand that upon passage of the amendment the flat tax will be unconstitutional so the legislature will need to address this issue by changing from the flat tax to the fair tax. This action should then be followed by passage of another amendment to the constitution requiring a super majority vote of state legislatures on federal tax issues.

Political obstacles:

The main obstacle we will face in implementing tax reform is that the current tax system has become firmly ingrained on our governmental system and society. Politicians have grown accustomed to using the tax code as a political tool to earn votes. It will require a major outcry from the people and possibly the replacement of some legislators to implement this reform.

Our tax code has also become firmly ingrained in our society. Many have additional tax withheld every payday so they can receive a large refund check at the end of the year. However, since the IRS pays no interest on the money they hold until the tax return is filed, this makes little sense. I would advise these individuals to place this extra money in a savings account and earn interest on it until their taxes are due.

Perhaps the toughest obstacle to overcome will be the fact that the present tax code has become a welfare system with the introduction of refundable tax credits. Some politicians will accuse supporters of any tax reform that does not include these credits of not caring for the poor. This could not be further from the truth. The reason for tax reform is to spur economic growth. This economic growth will create additional jobs and business opportunities resulting in fewer people needing to be on welfare. It would be better to create opportunities for individuals to become self sufficient instead of keeping them on the government dole.

I encourage each of you who read this to go to the links provided on this blog and contact your senators and congressperson. If they are not supportive of the needed tax reform, tell them you will support candidates who do in the next election. The tax tea parties we witnessed on April 15 show the public support for tax reform. Washington needs to listen to the people who elect them. If they do not, the people need to invite them to become spectators and elect people who will listen.

The Corruption of the Tax System

The primary source of revenue for The United States Government is the income tax. Like many other government programs, the income tax started with good intentions but politicians interested in votes have changed it through the years into the corrupt system it is today. In this posting, we will look at the history of the income tax, some major changes that have occurred through the years, and why I believe the current system is corrupt and in need of change.

History

Both the Federal Union and the Confederate States of America enacted the first income tax in the United States in 1861 in order to finance the Civil War. After the war was over, this tax was repealed since it was no longer necessary. Interestingly, the courts held that the Civil War income tax was not in violation of the constitution. This may have been due to its temporary nature and the modest reach of the tax due to its broad exemptions and low rates.

In 1894, a new Federal Income tax was enacted but this time opponents were able to successfully challenge its constitutionality in court. In Pollock v. Farmers Loan and Trust Co., the U.S. Supreme Court found that the income tax constituted a tax on real and personal property and would require apportionment. Since the legislation enacted in 1894 did not provide for apportionment, the law was ruled unconstitutional.

After ratification of the Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1913, the Pollock ruling was essentially overturned, opening the door for a federal income tax. The revenue act passed by congress in 1913 set up the first constitutionally legal income tax in the United States.

This first income tax allowed personal exemptions of $3000 for individuals and $4000 for married persons. The rates ranged from a low of 2% and a high of 6%. The tax also only applied to individuals with income in excess of $500,000.

Major Changes

The amount allowed for personal exemptions has not changed much throughout the years. In 2008 taxpayers received 3500 if they are single and 7000 if they are married. However, the rates have increased substantially to a high of 38%. The income threshold has also been lowered substantially.

The current tax code also allows individuals to deduct certain expenses off their taxable income. These deductions are designed to make the tax code fairer as well as encouraging of certain activities. For example, the tax code allows individuals to deduct medical expenses that are in excess of 7.5% of their taxable income. The code also allows individuals who suffer a casualty loss in excess of 2% of their income a deduction. This is designed to give individuals who have major health problems, or a major casualty loss, a break on their taxes.

To encourage charitable behavior the code also allows a deduction for both cash and non-cash charitable contributions. This is designed to encourage charitable giving. In order to encourage home ownership the code also allows homeowners to deduct the interest, taxes, and insurance on their homes. However, taxpayers are not allowed to deduct more than their income, at least not until the invention of the Earned Income Credit.

The Earned Income Credit (EIC), like many other government programs, started with good intentions. The idea was to give lower income individuals; primarily those just entering the workforce, a credit to help them get started. It was never intended that individuals would continue to receive the credit years later. However, politicians in charge of writing the tax code saw an opportunity to buy the votes of lower income individuals by expanding this program and adding additional refundable tax credits such as the additional child tax credit. Today, individuals making around $20,000 per year with two children can earn tax credits of as much as $5,000 as well as getting back any withholding tax they had withheld.

On the upper end of the tax code we have added the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). The idea here was to insure upper income individuals, who normally have higher deductions, paid some tax. This was accomplished by taking phasing out some of their deductions such as the home mortgage deduction or the deduction for charitable contributions.

The squeeze on the tax code caused by both the AMT and EIC mean that the burden of taxes in the United States lies heavily on the wealthy. According to the latest IRS figures, 86% of income tax is paid by the top 25% of income earners. The top 50% of earners pay 97% of the taxes with the top 1% paying 39%. There are also 40% of Americans who pay absolutely no income tax and many of these 40% also receive refundable tax payments.

Corruption:

Politicians have been successful in using the tax code to transfer wealth from wealthy individuals to poorer individuals though the AMT. They have also been able to set up a hidden welfare system in the tax code using refundable tax credits.

Adam Smith, one of our founding fathers, issued 10 principles of a desirable tax policy.
4. Economy meaning the tax policy has nominal collection costs and nominal compliance costs by taxpayers.

Interestingly the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) adopted these 10 guidelines on July 2, 2001. Unfortunately, lawmakers in the United States have failed to follow the guidelines of Adam Smith and instead have used the tax code to solidify their political power and are even proposing further tax increases on the wealthy and additional refundable tax credits such as an education tax credit. If the United States is to continue being an economic super power, the ability to use the tax code for political gain must be taken away from politicians. This will require an overhauling of the current tax code. Next week we will look at some of these alternative tax proposals.

Tax Day Becomes Tea Party Day

April 15 in The United States is a day many have come to dread. To most of us it is known as tax day but prior to the income tax, April 15 had another meaning in our countries history. April 15, 1865 was the day that President Lincoln was tragically assassinated.

Since the implementation of the income tax, April 15 has come to mean panic, late nights, and a night when some post offices have even stayed open until midnight. Panic because most of us want to delay the pain of paying taxes and spend late nights doing our taxes because we have procrastinated. With the introduction of e filing, the post offices no longer stay open until midnight but I personally remember dropping off my taxes at the post office just prior to midnight on April 15 because I was among the procrastinators. .

However, April 15, 2009 will be a tax day many will never forget. It is the time when tax day became tea party day. Ever since the inauguration of President Obama, republicans and many democrats have been shocked by the out of control spending of their government. These people are not crazy or dangerous. No, they are ordinary people who get up early every morning and come home late at night in order to provide for themselves and their families. They work hard for their money and understand the importance of living within their means. They also understand that when you borrow money it eventually has to be paid back.

What has these individuals in shock is the fact that with the level of debt being incurred by our government, they know that not only they, but also their children and grandchildren will be called upon to repay the debt. By attending the tea parties they were sending a message to their government. They are telling their senators, representatives and President Obama to stop the insanity. If these elected officials do not stop, they will join the growing numbers of unemployed people after the next election.

The tea parties were just the beginning. The participants in the tea parties now need to become proactive. They need to keep pressure on lawmakers and the president by communicating their concerns. If these concerns continue to be ignored, they will support candidates who share their concerns and kick the bums out of office.

The battle lines have been drawn. It will not be easy but it is time to fight this political battle. The future of our country is now in our hands. We are the voters and we have the ball. Now is not the time to fumble the ball but now is the time to go for the end zone and end this insanity.

Next week, how did our tax code become so corrupt?

Happy Palm Sunday

Today is Palm Sunday. Most all Americans know the meaning of Easter from Sunday school, church, or even the movies. However, Palm Sunday is also a significant day in the Christian faith and actually provides proof of who Jesus was. So on this Palm Sunday lets explore the significance of this day.

First, let us review the story of Palm Sunday. Jesus was journeying from the area of Galilee to Jerusalem. During his journey, Jesus stopped to perform many of his miracles. Among these miracles was the raising of Lazarus from the dead. As you can imagine, the word of someone being raised from the dead must have caused quite a stir even in ancient times when they did not have the benefit of television, radio, or the internet. So, as Jesus approached Jerusalem a throng of people were waiting.

Jesus told his disciples to get a donkey for him to ride into Jerusalem on. This seems odd, for the Messiah and promised King of the Jews to ride into town on a donkey. However, the method of his entry was a code designed for the Jews in town to understand, but not the Romans occupying the city.

In ancient times when a king approached a city, if he was on a horse, he was coming to wage war. However, if he approached the city on a donkey, he was coming in peace. By coming on a donkey, Jesus was signifying that he was not coming to wage war, but to bring peace. However, the people living in Jerusalem greeted him with cries of hosanna and were waving palm branches, which also are code. These actions by the people signified that they did not understand the true reason for Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and mistakenly thought he was coming to overthrow the Roman government.

The true reason for Christ’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday was to sacrifice his life for the sins of man. He was to be the ultimate Passover lamb. In fact, he entered into the city through the sheep gate, which is also the same gate through which lambs were brought into Jerusalem to be used as Passover lambs. It will not be until the second coming of Christ as described in Revelation 19 that Jesus will come on a horse to wage war and establish his kingdom on earth. However, even then he will actually be coming to end the battle of Armageddon. So, his war will actually be a righteous war with the purpose of ending global annihilation by the armies of man. Another way of expressing this is that the first coming of Jesus was to save the souls of men and his second coming is to save the planet from destruction by man.

Jesus response to the reaction of the throng as reported in Luke is that he wept. He wept because the people did not understand what was going on and, as we would later see the same throng that was elated by his triumphal entry would turn on him and call for his crucifixion. However, there is one more significant fact about Palm Sunday that provides irrefutable proof that Jesus is indeed the promised Messiah.

In Daniel 9:25, the exact date of the Messiah’s triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem is predicted. In this verse, Daniel talks of 7 weeks followed by 62 weeks after the decree is issued to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. In Bible code, a week equals 7 years. By doing some simple math we can determine that Daniel is talking about 483 years after the decree is made.

Archeologists have actually found the decree and converting the date to our present calendar, they have determined the date to be March 14, 445 B.C. Since they used a lunar calendar in these times using a 360 day year, accounting for leap years, they have determined that the date of the triumphal entry of the Messiah into Jerusalem would be April 6, 32 A.D. This happens to be the date the first Palm Sunday occurred and since history does not record any other triumphal entries into Jerusalem on this date, Jesus must be the promised Messiah.

As Easter Sunday, or as I like to think of it, resurrection day approaches, I encourage you to take a moment and think of the significance of Palm Sunday. Do not be like the Jews of the time of Christ and miss the true meaning of the triumphal entry. The price for our sin is death. The Bible is not speaking of just physical death, which we all will experience someday, but it means eternal separation from God. Jesus paid the price of death for our sins by dying on the cross and rising from the dead in victory three days later. His victory means we can escape our destiny of eternal separation from God by simply accepting his gift of salvation as payment of our debt. If you have not already done so in your life, I encourage you to take a moment to pray. All you need to do is acknowledge that you have sinned, that you believe Christ came and paid the death penalty for your sins, and that you accept his payment for your debt.

After you have done this, I encourage you to click on the link “Spiritual Help”. Go to the link about how to know God. They will not hound you or put you on some eternal mailing list. They only want to send your some information about what to do now.

Once again, I want to wish everyone a happy Palm Sunday.
